AP Physics comes in 2 primary flavors : non-Calculus (or Algebra-only) or Calculus-based to address College-level freshman courses in Physics. Physics covers a very wide range of topics and by convention, its fundamentals (beginning with Kinematics / Motion and Mechanics) are addressed in Physics 1. Electricity, Magnetism, Optics, Waves, Thermodynamics and Modern Physics (Quantum Physics and Relativity) and related topics are covered in Physics 2. Both are available in Algebra and Calculus variants - thus a total of 4 different AP Physics programs.
Physics 1 includes Kinematics, Force & Dynamics, Work, Energy & Power, Linear Momentum, Rotating Systems, Oscillations, Fluids
Physics 2 includes Thermodynamics, Electricity & Magnetism, Optics (Geometric), Waves, Sounds, and Modern Physics
Since Physics is math-intensive, a good understanding of that subject at a Precalculus/Algebra 1 /Algebra 2 level is a minimum requirement for ALL AP Physics programs. Depending upon your student's preparation, the requisite Math courses may be taken concurrently.
The Calculus AP streams will require Calculus (at an AP Calculus AB level, minimum)
Physics 2 and C-Electricity and Magnetism will require Physics 1 and C-Mechanics respectively
